Reedy takes charge as Comets look to maintain dominance

For the last decade, Mike Reid has been the head coach for the Mason High School (MHS) Men’s Tennis team. During his tenure as head coach, Reid led the Comets to five Greater Miami Conference (GMC) championships, along with four Ohio Tennis Coaches Association (OTCA) state titles.

Following the end of the 2025 season, Reid made the decision to retire from coaching, leaving an important spot to fill in the program. His departure marked an end to his successful run and highlighted the positive impact Reid had on the Mason Men’s Tennis program.

“I had a lot of fun being the coach for our team,” Reid said. “I think what makes coaching so great is seeing the players gain confidence in themselves, because you can see the hard work that goes into it begin to pay off.”

Stepping into the new role of head coach is former Lakota West High School tennis player, Brendan Reedy. Reedy brings a strong track record both as a former player and as a previous coach of Mason’s junior varsity team. Reid trusts that Reedy is fit to carry on the success that the Comets’ tennis program is accustomed to.

“I think he will be able to put his own mark on the program,” Reid said. “I have a lot of confidence in Coach Reedy; he is the guy for the job and he will be able to keep the success we had up.”

Now, as head coach, Reedy has earned the responsibility to develop his players and guide the program to more success. Having already worked closely with Mason athletes at the junior varsity level for two years, Reedy feels that he has learned a lot from watching Coach Reid lead the team.

“When I came into coaching and I got to watch firsthand how Mike Reid ran the program, I saw how incredible this program is,” Reedy said. “The dedication and the commitment the players have and also the community around this team, it is just top-notch.”

The culture at Mason stood out to Reedy and proved that the culture around the program will allow him to thrive as a coach. Reedy pointed out that the decision to start coaching at the varsity level was an easy decision for him to make.

“I was ecstatic to make the move,” Reedy said. “I knew right when I started coaching at Mason that this is a great place to be, and I love it here.”

Looking ahead, Reedy has been thinking about the long-term success of the program. He wants the organization to give off the same impression that he had of the Mason tennis team back in high school as a player.

“I remember when I played Mason for the first time and I was shocked [by] how good all of them were,” Reedy said. “I was really impressed and I knew it was an elite program. Now having the coaching [perspective], I feel the same way.”

After years of competing against the Comets, Reedy will now find himself leading the program he once battled against in high school. As he works to establish his own mark on the program, Reedy has emphasized the importance of maintaining their tradition of excellence.

While the coaching change is a large transition for the team, the players have been the core of this shift. For the returning players, the change in leadership has given them a new perspective as they prepare for the upcoming season. Senior Greg Bernadsky has been on varsity for four years and is committed to Cornell University to play tennis at the Division I level.

“The transition has been good, but I have to admit I miss having Coach Reid by my side,” Bernadsky said. “It feels weird to come to practice without him, but I know we are all excited to get to know Coach Reedy and continue to grow this season.”

With a new head coach leading and a strong veteran group, the Mason men’s tennis team has begun the Spring 2026 season motivated to build off last year. The team is confident that they have what it takes to have another successful season and reach their goals.

“I would say that our goal is to repeat last year and win the state championship again,” Bernadsky said. “Coach Reedy has helped us a lot; setting the tone and being very motivating on and off the court.”
