The Summer I Turned Pretty recently returned for its third and final season, and it has taken the internet by storm. Each episode is filled to the brim with popular music, featuring many songs that viewers already understand and connect to. “False God” by Taylor Swift, “we can’t be friends” by Ariana Grande, “Cherry” by Harry Styles–this well-known soundtrack gives intense scenes an added poignancy and plot connection.
This season, following the storyline of Jenny Han’s third book in the series, the directors maintain a thoughtful balance of directly copying scenes from the novel and reimagining moments on screen. While the show has its cringey moments, The Summer I Turned Pretty series primarily plays to its strengths: creating emotionally charged moments, a captivating plot, and a cultivated summer nostalgia that will last beyond the final episode.
