Comets girls tennis earns sixth straight GMC Championship

Serving up another championship, that’s exactly what the Mason Comets girls tennis team did in the final round of the Greater Miami Conference tennis tournament on Saturday, October 3.
The Comets dominated second place Sycamore in the finals on their way to their sixth consecutive GMC championship.
The Comets came out with a victory in the singles and doubles matches to cap off an undefeated tournament and regular season conference schedule.
Sensational sophomore Shyla Aggarwal came out on top once again in the first singles with a 6-2, 6-1 score over Sycamore sophomore Elle Frischer.
“You know it feels good to win even if it’s an easy match because I’ve worked so hard to come this far since we didn’t even know if we were going to have a season,” Aggarwal said. “We all have our bad days, but you have to turn it around since it’s all mind over matter whether you’re in practice or a game.”
Aggarwal, nicknamed the “franchise” by her teammates, was named GMC Player of the Year after her dominating performance. She hopes to continue this momentum in the postseason and continue to provide leadership for her team.
“I’m apparently seen as a leader on the team who’s taken ownership as everyone feeds off of my energy” said Aggarwal. “Coach Reid always calls me the franchise because I worked towards being known as a strong player to not just only the team, but to people at Mason High School who are now interested in knowing wins or losses and where we go from there.”
Right next door to Aggarwal, second singles Anna Tonkal’s match was a success with a 6-1, 6-1 score, keeping another Aviator opponent on her toes with her forehand and passing shots working in her favor. Tonkal, earned first team conference honors.
“Coach Reid always says that we need to play to the best of our ability regardless of how the match is actually going,” Tonkal said.”If someone on the team next to you is improving, you should be too.”
Tabbed as the favorite to win the conference championship, head coach Mike Reid believes his team takes the court each match taking nothing for granted.
“At the end of the day today, we shouldn’t take anything for granted, especially with our goal of being state champions,” said Reid. “My girls were taught that even if it is an easy win, you still take away what you can and go home today and learn from it.”
