Artist Spotlight: Pavement

Alisha Verma | The Chronicle

Formed in Stockton, California in 1989 by Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, Pavement has cemented itself as one of the most influential bands to come out of the 90s alternative rock scene. Whether he’s playfully half-singing, or shedding a blood-curdling scream, lead vocalist and guitarist Stephen Malkmus’ voice exudes an effortless charm reminiscent of a 70s Lou Reed. Malkmus’ equally brilliant songwriting is witty and sarcastic, filled with vivid and cryptic imagery that’s most on display in songs like “In The Mouth a Desert” and “Harness Your Hopes.” Malkmus and Kannberg’s guitar skills are another integral part of the band’s sound, whether they’re distorted and furious on tracks like “Half a Canyon”, or gentle and melodic on “Here”. Though Pavement would eventually disband in 1999, they’ve set aside their differences to embark on a second reunion tour later this year – a perfect opportunity for newcomers to experience this gem of 90s indie rock.
