Movie Review: The Invisible Man

Horror movies can become monotonous. Characters often seem to be clueless, running right into the killers plot. Walking into the theatre, I didn’t expect much more than a run-of-the-mill movie. Thankfully I was mistaken. The Invisible Man is not a new idea or character (since it was first thought up a long time ago) but this story is different. Caught in an abusive relationship with a tech mogul, Cecilia, played by Elizabeth Moss, escapes. She is constantly on the verge of breaking down throughout the whole film. Cecilia finds out that Adrian, her ex, faked his own suicide and he is now hunting and haunting her, but nobody else can see him. As Adrian makes himself more present by leaving clues of his presence, his tortuous hauntings get more intense, as they get worse Cecilia’s mental state deteriorates. Elizabeth Moss did a fantastic job of getting absolute terror and insanity across the screen. As you could not see the monster in this movie the sound design was vital. There was almost no music in the movie, letting you feel like you are listening for footsteps, breathing, anything to alert you that he is there. The only thing that disappointed me was the ending, which I will not spoil. Overall Leigh Whannell directed a fantastic psychotic thriller centered about a psychotic ex-boyfriend. Every breath you take, every step you take, he’s watching.
