Chronicle All Stars – Spring 2022
At the conclusion of each sports season, the Greater Miami Conference (GMC) selects All-Conference teams for each individual sport based on athlete’s season performances. The Chronicle, however, has determined our spring sports selections for an All-Chronicle team. (All stats as of 5/9 per gmcsports.com)
Spring sports coach of the year: Curt Bly | Baseball
Bly has led his uber-talented squad to the top record in the GMC. The Comets opened their season with a brutal non-conference schedule including a road trip to Tennessee. The team has lost just two games since the trip, and already matched its 2021 conference win total.
Brenden Garula | Baseball
Brenden Garula has been arguably the top pitcher and hitter in the entire GMC. The future Cincinnati Bearcat has a conference leading five wins on the mound to go along with 50 strikeouts. His three home runs are second in the conference, and he is slugging a .379 batting average.
Vignesh Gogineni | Boys Tennis
Vignesh Gogineni has followed up his 2021 state runner-up finish with an undefeated season in singles matches, as well as serving as a critical on-court leader for the team. The Yale signee has been the top player in the conference for the second consecutive year.
Abby Love | Girls Track
Abby Love has proven herself as one of the city’s top sprinters in just her sophomore year. She has the fastest 100 and 200 meter times in the GMC with times of 12.28 and 25.16 respectively. Her 12.28 would have placed 5th at the 2021 state championship meet last year.
Noah Samol | Baseball
Noah Samol, a Georgia Tech signee, missed all of last season due to Tommy John surgery, but has emerged with five wins, tied for the most in the GMC, and 59 strikeouts, which is second in the conference. His no-hitter in the backyard rivalry at Prasco Park against Kings cemented his debut season as one of the best in recent Mason history.
Lily Eagleston | Girls Track
Lily Eagleston has made an immediate impact as a freshman as one of the top hurdlers in the area. She won the Troy Invitational in the 300 meter hurdles. Her 46.26 time at the Anderson Invitational is the top in the GMC and one of the top freshman times in the state. She also won the 100 meter hurdles at that meet.
Brady Messer | Boys Track
Brady Messer has done a little bit of everything for the boys track team this year. He runs a sub-two minute 800 and a 4:24 1600, both top four in the GMC, and is also the anchor leg for the 4×800 meter relay. The Eastern Michigan commit will be counted on to score in multiple events as the Comets look to retake the GMC title.
Michael Murphy | Baseball
Michael Murphy, the youngest of the three Comet aces, has put together a spectacular season on the mound and at the plate. Murphy has the second-lowest ERA of all GMC starters, and has four wins, tied for third best in the conference only behind his teammates. Murphy also adds hitting production with 21 RBIs, 2nd in the GMC.
Sam Pennington | Softball
Sam Pennington has an unbelievable .657 batting average, third in the GMC, in the midst of her breakout season. Her 44 hits and 27 steals are each second in the conference. Pennington’s knack for getting on base has been instrumental in the Comet’s success.
Anthony Fago | Boys Volleyball
Anthony Fago has dominated in his senior season, leading the GMC in both kills and aces. His 248 kills are second most in a single-season for Comet since joining the GMC. Fago’s booming spikes and on-court leadership have helped lead the Comets’ to a second-place standing in the conference.
